Shawna received her Master of Science degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, with special emphasis on child language disorders, including Autism. Shawna’s research and clinical work focused on families from both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking backgrounds. In addition, she received the Outstanding Graduate Student award from the Medical School and was awarded the Herz Gold Medal as the top student in her graduating class (when visiting the UNR campus you can find her name engraved on a pillar in the honor court). Shawna is trained in the Lindamood-Bell Phoneme Sequencing Program (LiPS) to help children with reading/spelling skills. Additionally, she has participated in courses related to Social Thinking and the Incredible Flexible You program. She enjoys the variety of winter/summer activities that the Reno/Lake Tahoe area has to offer (snow skiing, water skiing, boating, softball) in addition to spending time with her husband and sons.
Joleen Palmer M.S., CCC-SLP
Joleen received both her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a Minor in Communication from the University of Nevada, Reno. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she worked with adults with developmental and physical disabilities at a non-profit organization. She has a history of aiding both children and adults with special needs and disabilities. She has experience working as a reading tutor, guiding youth at an art camp, and aiding children at an emergency housing facility. During her undergraduate studies, she spent time abroad working on organic farms and biking from Germany to Spain. Joleen returned to the University of Nevada, Reno to receive her Master of Science degree in Speech & Language Pathology. During this time, she gained experience interning at an elementary school and a private practice. Joleen has completed the Introduction to PROMPT: Technique course and has experience using the Lindamood Bell Phoneme Sequencing Program (LiPS). She enjoys working-out, crafting, Sushi, reading, playing games, home repair, and spending time with her family.
Julia Cabal M.S., CCC-SLP
Julia received both her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from the University of Nevada, Reno. She completed her externships in the Washoe County School District and here at Sierra Therapy Group where she used her focused passion and rigorous discipline to evaluate and treat a variety of speech and language disorders. She believes that every situation provides a unique learning opportunity, and that by capitalizing on every teachable moment, she can give clients the tools to be successful every step of the way. She enjoys running, hiking, meditating, reading, and writing.
Amanda Casey M.S., CCC-SLP
Amanda earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota. Following graduation, she worked as a behavior therapist using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy working with children with Autism. Amanda later moved back to her hometown of Reno, Nevada to pursue her Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Nevada, Reno. She has experience working in pediatric and acute medical settings evaluating and determining treatment plans for individuals with speech/language disorders, intellectual disabilities, Down Syndrome, Autism, swallowing disorders, aphasia, and voice disorders. Amanda's interests include reading, playing tennis, and spending time with her family, friends, and her dog.
Hailey Corthell, M.S., CF-SLP
Hailey earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology from Wagner College on Staten Island, New York. Following graduation, she worked in education outreach with the National Park Service at Oregon Caves National Monument and Congaree National Park. She then moved to Flagstaff, Arizona to earn her Master of Science Degree in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology at Northern Arizona University. Hailey has evaluated and treated children and adults in the areas of speech, language, and hearing in a variety of settings: Montessori elementary and middle schools, private clinic, outpatient hospital, assisted living home, support/rehabilitation group, and skilled nursing facility. Hailey's favorite hobbies include skiing, snowboarding, backpacking, mountain and road biking, and yoga.
Annelise Boge M.S., OTR/L
Annelise received her Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Colorado State University (Fort Collins), and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Linfield College (McMinnville, OR). Prior to returning to school to study occupational therapy, she worked in the day treatment program at Children’s Behavioral Services (CBS) treating preschoolers with severe emotional and behavioral problems and as a Developmental Specialist at Nevada Early Intervention Services (NEIS). She has experience with the evaluation and treatment of children with autism, feeding issues, Down Syndrome, developmental delays, behavioral problems, ADHD, sensory processing difficulties, fine and gross motor delays and cognitive disabilities. Annelise firmly believes that through a partnership between child, family and therapist, every child has the potential to succeed.
Sara Finch, OTD, OTR/L
Sara was drawn to occupational therapy as a career because of her desire to serve others, continue learning, and use her creativity. She graduated with a Bachelors of Science in occupational therapy from Loma Linda University in 2000. For ten years she explored different areas of occupational therapy including home health for adults, inpatient hospital care for adults, outpatient clinic care for children and adults, and school-based therapy for children. Through these experiences Sara has realized that working with children brings her the most joy. Her passions are facilitating success in daily occupations for her clients and watching their confidence soar. In 2010 Sara returned to school to pursue a doctorate in occupational therapy through Creighton University. She geared her studies towards pediatrics with an emphasis on sensory integration, vision therapy, and feeding techniques. Sara finished her doctorate degree in August 2013. She is excited to continue her pediatric practice with Sierra Therapy Group.
Barbie Maher, Administrative Assistant/Billing
Barbie has 20 years of retail and management experience including marketing, administration, and inventory audit. She has also been a Sound Reading Solutions Literacy Volunteer for Communities in Schools. Her dedication and tremendous work ethic are a great asset to the SSLG team. She is energetic, caring, patient, and fun loving. Barbie has a sincere passion for children and a desire to make a positive difference in their lives. Barbie is married and the proud mother of two. She enjoys spending time with her family, playing softball, snow skiing, playing the piano, parent volunteer and baking for various fund raising events including The Children’s Miracle Network.
